Outdoors in open grassland frequented by grazers.
Materials
Containers, Tracks and Signs of Southern and East African Wildlife, by Chris and Tilde Stuart
Procedure
Allow students to go outdoors and, using their containers, collect a variety of dung recognized by different sizes and colors. Using the Stuarts’ field guide, identify which dung belongs to which animal.
Analysis and Follow-up Activity
1. Ask students why it’s important to be able to recognize different kinds of dung.
2. Make a poster of dung samples, and label each one with the name of the animal it comes from.
