On February 3rd, 2023 we were thrilled to witness the birth of a healthy baby hippo on our live cam on the exposed riverbed. Hippos generally give birth underwater, so viewers witnessed a truly unusual event. Mom's behaviour was likely driven by the extreme drought we are experiencing.
We've just come back from the field and are thrilled to report that we sighted mother and newborn nestled in the underbrush of a part of the river with flowing water. The calf is a week old now and getting stronger daily. Our sponsor/partner Explore.org hosted a contest to name the baby hippo. By popular vote, the calf's name is "Amani." Amani is Swahili for peace, which is how we sign off on our blog. We appreciate the synergy.
